Old-Fashioned Coffee Sodas

Old-Fashioned Coffee Sodas

Betty Rosbottom’s book “Coffee: Sumptuous Drinks and Treats” hails this as a blast from the past when soda fountain counters were ALL the rage. After tasting this, I can understand why. It’s half milkshake, half ice cream float, half something delicious I cannot pinpoint. In every scenario it is wonderful. I actually made this last Wednesday before going to work and then made it again at Brad and Ki’s pre-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving dinner up in Flagstaff for everyone since we didn’t have a kitchen to cook something to bring. It was a decent hit; I’m happy with the way it went. You’ll notice that adding the coffee liqueur and dark chocolate are optional steps in this recipe. It does taste delish without them, but who wants to live in THAT kind of world? I say add them on and don’t skimp on it! A few tips from my own try of this recipe: 1) the recipe says to mix the sugar into the chilled coffee, I have decided that it works much better if you do it beforehand while it is still hot, as the first time I tried this recipe it took the sugar FOREVER to dissolve in the chilled stuff, 2) freeze the glasses you’re going to use for this. We used two beer mugs and I had them chilling in the freezer a few hours before we put this together. I feel like it makes it even more refreshing. This would be great to make for yourself, but honestly, I feel like it’s even better when you can make it with someone, or for someone, so you can sit back with the finished mugs in hand and say: “Yea, we did this and it looks amazing.”

Old-Fashioned Coffee Sodas
3 cups chilled brewed coffee, preferably a mild Colombian or house blend
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
3 cups (1 1/2 pints) coffee ice cream
1 cup soda water
4 teaspoons Kahlua or other coffee liqueur (optional)
1/2 cup heavy or whipping cream, whipped to soft peaks
Shaved dark chocolate (optional)

1. Pour the coffee into a 4-cup or larger glass measuring cup with a spout and stir in the sugar.
2. Place 2 large scoops (about 1/3 cup each) ice cream into each of 4 tall glasses.
3. Pour 3/4 cup sweetened coffee into each glass, then add 1/4 cup soda water to each.
4. If desired, add 1 teaspoon coffee liqueur to each serving.
5. Top the sodas with some whipped cream and, if desired, sprinkle them with shaved chocolate.
6. Serve with straws and long spoons.
